Becoming a member

Membership of the library service is free, and any resident of Western Australia can join.

Join Online

eMembership gives you access to our electronic services and resources. You can sign up online here. It's the perfect option if you find it hard to get into a library but are still keen to access our extensive eCollections. You must be 18 or over to join online.

Join in the Library

To borrow physical items and access all our services, sign up online. Then, go to the library with ID showing your current address to get your library card.

If you're under 18, you will need to go with a parent or guardian. If you have trouble with any of these requirements, please talk to our library staff.

Membership Conditions

  • Always show your library card or ID when borrowing books.
  • Tell the library if your contact information changes.
  • You are responsible for everything borrowed on your card, and/or your children's card.
  • Return books in good condition and let us know if something is already damaged.
  • Pay all charges for lost items or items returned to the library in a damaged condition.
  • If you lose your card, report it as soon as possible to avoid use by an unauthorised person. Replacement library card fees may apply.
  • The library collection contains materials for all ages. You're responsible for selection of items borrowed for your child.
  • Always supervise children under the ages of 12 in the City’s libraries (siblings 16 years and older are suitable to supervise).
  • If you have overdue items or fines, your membership may be suspended.
  • Library of Things Collection has an extra Lending Agreement, which you can review on the Library of Things catalogue page.
  • Be respectful and follow the Library Values.
  • If members act in a threatening or abusive manner, we'll ask them to leave right away. They may also lose their right to use our services and facilities in the future.

General Information

  • You can borrow up to 20 items.
  • You can borrow and return books at any Canning Library.
  • Most items can be borrowed for three weeks, but 'Most Wanted' items have a one-week loan.
  • Some items renew automatically if eligible.
  • You can renew books at the library or online, except if: they've been renewed twice; have been requested by someone else; there are any overdue items or fines on your membership.
  • Overdue notices are issued as a courtesy reminder.
  • Membership details are confidential and will not be shared with anyone else.
